English Communication

A couple of my friends told me it is difficult to communicate with their immigrant parents / family members especially when they do not speak much of English. If you are the first generation born in America, how do you compromise or deal with your immigrant parents / family members when they don't understand much English?

  2. Well I'm an international student, I wasn't born here but i'm use to American way of life. So it is sometimes hard for me to communicate with my mom. Not because we have language barrier but because the different way we think of things and do them. I sometimes don't get my mom and so is she. Hope that relate to your quesiton

  4. Well, I was born in Hong Kong and moved here when I was 8. So I am fluent in both English and cantonese, but yes my parents are not very good at English. Although this is not a challenge for me with regular conversations, it can be when it comes to deeper things. I usually just try to explain in cantonese as best as I can.
