Jeremy Lin

Do you think Jeremy Lin's rise to fame was mainly due to the fact of his Asian descent?

  1. Other than actually playing well, I do feel a majority of his attention was because of his Asian background. He had a very stereotypical Asian background being raised and focused with studies - he attended Harvard. He has been playing well but it seems as though the bandwagon was composed of many other Asians.

  2. Not to hate on jeremy Lin but i absolutely agree that majority of his attention or rise to fame was due to his Asian background. If you compare his stats with other players that play the same position, he is an average player. People were shock that an asian guy was putting up numbers or doing things that an asian person isnt suppose to do. Asians have a stereotype that their unathletic or cant run or jump as well as a African American or White person can. And just doing things out of the norm for a person of asian background got him really famous.

  3. Absolutely. He was receiving more recognition than the likes of much better NBA players. You can also account for the fact that he was playing in the city of New York, where any one individual that stands out will be emphasized in the media. But for the most part, it is because of Jeremy Lin's background that he was receiving all the recognition.

  4. I believe that his race played a huge part in his fame. So rare are there good Asian basketball players that once he had just a few games in his streak, people were immediately attracted to him as a player and he got famous very quickly. Nowadays we are not hearing as muhc of him anymore.

  5. I think that Jeremy Lin definitely received the majority of his attention because he is Asian. He did rise over many stereotypes in the basketball community. People just don't expect Asians to be good basketball players. Yao Ming also received a lot of attention (although his huge height also played an obvious factor) because he waa Asian. On the bright side, the Asian community does seem more interested in basketball now.

  6. In my personal opinion, Jeremy Lin is just a solid player with good fundamentals. Having an Asian descent definitely caused him to receive all the attention. In all honesty, if he wasn't Asian, he most likely would not have been hyped up like that. Due to the fact that the NBA consists of most Whites or African Americans, it is only possible that Lin received the fame. Because he is not performing as strong as he did in the beginning, we can tell that the media is not over-hyping him as much as they did in the beginning.

  7. He did receive all that hype because he was Asian, but it was because there was a lack of Asians in the NBA. Same thing happened with Obama, a lot of people voted for him because he was Black, and he received a lot of attention for being the first Black president of the US.

  8. because he is an asian and there were not many asians until Lin came to NBA. so Line could be popular and still getting attention among people.

  9. Definitely, Jeremy Lin got all of the attention because he was Asian. There are other players doing as well as him, but the fact that he was Asian and making a big impact when he started was how he got so hyped up.

  10. I agree with that statement. because of his Asian background, he became the spotlight. especially when there are not many other Asian players in NBA i guess. i'm not sure though

  11. Samuel Young:

i believe it is a lot of factors besides that one that plays a large role. Here are a few:

    1) Timing: Came at the perfect time in which he could blow up.
2)Situation: The situation the knicks were in at the time with two players injured open big doors for him.
    3) Skills: He may not be the best NBA player to live. He Definitely isnt a michael jordan, but he has got some skills that many players cannot capitalize on the way he does which can often give him an edge.
    4) likeability: Humble, kind, Christian, team player, a good sport, and he's asian! whats not to like?

He's someone that brings people to their television sets and grabs the attention of all enthinicities and all people. That is why he is soo big. He's a commodity that helps bring all people together, black, white or yellow and gives them all hope.

  12. I think his rise to fame was partly due to his race, but there are tons of Asian basketball players out there, and they dont get attention because of their race. Jeremy Lin got media attention because he was finally allowed to play and he kicked ass. He was kind of a bench warmer in the NBA and passed around from team to team but when they finally put him out there, he showed everyone what he was made of. Yeah, he's asian, but he also has a ton of talent.

  13. I feel that the reason why Jeremy Lin is such an icon in the Asian American community is not only because of his athletic capabilities, but because he is also book smart. Also, the bay area is really proud of him because he attended Palo Alto High School. He serves as a role model for young Asian Americans, because he shows that through hard work and dedication, you can become anything you want.

  14. I think that reason are:
1: His belief made him more diligent and have a more motivation.
2: He had never and ever given up.
I wanna say that everybody can be successful when they don't give up.
