Racist UCLA girl
Regarding the girl who was forced to leave UCLA for her racist commentary about Asian students at her school, do you believe that was the right punishment for her? Knowing now that she didn’t intentionally mean for it to become viral and was only intended to be watched by her close friends.

I think that regardless of who she thinks her audience is, she should still be punished, as making a video of her saying the racist comments itself is wrong. She should be mindful of what she says about other races, even though she only intended to "say" it to her friends. The problem lies with how she thinks of Asians, and not who watches the video. Even if she did not intentionally mean for it to become viral, she should have thought about what she said and reflect on how she would feel if someone else were to say these comments to her. She should not say that even if she only wanted to say it to her friends.
ReplyDeleteThe punishment in question may have been harsher than was needed but it definitely got the message across to the UCLA girl. I doubt she even thinks racist or stereotypical thoughts any more without at least wincing in fear and imagining the consequences of her statements beforehand. That or she completely avoids making any kinds of racial or stereotypical statements entirely.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the punishment was appropriate. If any kind of person made that on the radio or on TV they would have lost their jobs immediately and treating it as any less would not be right. It's just the same as using other derogatory words to insult other racaes.
ReplyDeleteI do think she deserved to leave UCLA, but overall I think the punishment was a bit too harsh. While she did say things very ignorantly and was very racist, she received many death threats and had personal information stolen. She definitely should have been aware of the fact that once something is on the internet, it is public to all to see and just a simple click can make it viral. Hopefully, she learned to be less ignorant for a political science major.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of who the video was meant to be watched by, recording yourself making harsh judgments on people is something a normal person would not do. Even if she didn't receive the punishment, she probably would have left the school on her own. Why would you want to attend a school with many people hating on you.
ReplyDeleteShe was a political science major. As soon as you post something up to the internet, it's up for grabs. It was a horribly inappropriate since it was when Japan was receiving the brunt of typhoon, so the kids were just worried about their family.
ReplyDeleteThink about it like this: If she was studying in Japan, and then 9/11 happened, she calls home to see if her family is ok along with a bunch of other kids from New York, and then some Japanese kid makes a video making fun of Americans disrupting their study time.
It's culturally insensitive, especially the fact that she's a political science major man.

ReplyDeleteRegardless, I still believe that she deserved to leave the school because it was her own fault for even making a video like that in the first place. Mainly, at a school with a bunch of Asians.
ReplyDeletei do not think she deserves that ( to be kicked out from UCLA ), but her action and her video of racism is really bad and i really hate it. it does not matter the target of that video, the target or the goal is racism towards other people

ReplyDeleteI feel bad for her. She definitely didnt deserve all of what she was punished for but she does need to be more careful with her words and how she uses them. I defintely hope she is doing a lot better. It is hard to live with something like this on your shoulders for the rest of your life.
She didn't deserve to be punished that severely....we have freedom of speech in this country and if a famous actor made racist jokes on SNL, it would be celebrated. She's obviously very close-minded and racist but she shouldn't have to give up her education because she made one stupid video. I think she should have fought to overrule/overturn the decision.
ReplyDeleteI do not think anyone deserves to be forced to leave a school. I feel sorry for her. Regardless, she just wanted to express her anger and frustration via the media. Unfortunately, she did it in a wrong way. If I were her in that situation, I could have told the manager of the library, let the manager to deal with it for me.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much agree with her not needing to be kicked out of school, but there needed to be a solution regardless because those that attended that school and were Asian were uncomfortable it was just a bad environment for her to be in. It could have resulted with someone doing something to her so her leaving was probably the only solution for everyone to be satisfied.
